Thanks! Barrels work well as long as they are large enough that you don't have to water too frenquently. I drilled 1/4 holes in the bottom of the barrels for drainage. I highly recommend the "Merced" large producer 20 to 25 - 8oz to 12oz tomatos (each harvest). I use a product from Berger Horticulture Product in place of soil. It's GREAT! Holds mosture and is much lighter than soil. Their phone number is 903-945-5403 if you want to find out who might carry their product near you. (and no I don't work for them) later-jb
Mike the Merced is a variety of tomato developed by Texas A&M. It is a little known but fabulous tomato. Huge producer! Great taste!
As for the soil sub. its called "Potting Soil" but it's not soil. Berger pronouned "bur-j" only sells to nurseries around the country. I just found this out today when I called them re: your questions. I buy it cheap from their busted bag pile located here in Sulphur Springs, Texas. They will sell it by the bag I beg, if you want to try it. I'm still thinking about wheither to change it out or use it a second time. They say it should be okay. I may try... Your compost pile sound great! Cow manure is something I always add to my tomato garden. How hot does it get there in VA? Merced can really take the heat here in TX. jb
Thanks! for the info on "green manuring" I'll give that a try...
Good talking to another green thumb
